Mobiu

We’ve seen some rather nasty incidents where mass amounts of private and sensitive data has been lost or stolen over the past twelve months. And that’s just the incidents that the press get to hear about. It’s no secret that USB drives are one of the biggest painpoints for any organisation which allows employees access or the capability to copy or remove data off site.

Nearly all USB flash drives come with no security or encryption, and whilst security software and data vaults are available in operating systems like Mac OS X and Windows Vista, there’s a clear lack of understanding or willingness to sacrifice convenience in order to secure sensitive data.

Mobiu have come up with a solution which promises to make encryption and security seamless when working with data from a USB drive. Not only does it offer the most comprehensive security solution that accounts for most situations, it also offers a failsafe in the event the drive is lost or stolen with an integrated online backup service.

The Mobiu flash drive has an integrated SIM card that authenticates the USB drive and is part of the authentication and security process that keeps the data safe. Removal or tampering of the SIM card renders the USB drive useless. It is also the enabler for deactivating the flash drive when its reported stolen.

So how does Mobiu achieve this? Software that is installed on the flash drive provides all of the necessary encryption and functionality as well as file management for handling a variety of file formats such as spreadsheets and text documents. The software is designed to only ever write to itself, resulting in no digital footprints left on the host machine. This makes the Mobiu safe and convenient to use on any Windows computer in any location.

Once your files are on the flash drive, the only way anyone can get access to it is if they have the four-digit pin code known only by you. Whenever this pin code is verified, the software connects to the Mobiu servers to check and authenticate that the drive hasn’t been compromised. If you’ve reported it as stolen, then the drive can be erased next time someone tries to access it. A replacement drive can then be used to restore all of your data from the online backup service, resulting in zero compromise and minimal data loss.

At £125 + VAT, you get 1GB of flash memory and online storage amounts to 5GB that requires renewal every 12 months. Included in the price is the Mobiu backup software, remote access, secure file sharing, office productivity suite, Firefox, PDF and zip software. Most of those apps seem fairly standard, but why Firefox? Browsers have a tendency to leave all sorts of digital footprints on a computer when you’ve been browsing the web. Running a copy of Firefox locally from your Mobiu means that you leave no trace on the computer for what you’ve been doing online.

There’s not much more that you can ask for if you’re working away from your main machine and it’s the most secure solution I’ve come across for moving data away from the safety of your own computer.

Considering the cost of flash drives, you may think that this is an expensive solution, especially if you’re looking to implement this throughout your organisation. The price you pay for Mobiu may be insignificant when compared to the damage that could be caused from losing sensitive data.
