Pure Chronos iDock
It was only a matter of time before they started combining iPod docks with digital radios. One of the top names in the world of digital radio systems, Pure, recently unveiled the Chronos iDock. This system not only plays your favourites tunes from your favourite mp3 player, it will also receive digital and analog broadcasts…and it also tells you when to wake up.
The wedge-shaped Chronos features a white plastic body with two large silver speaker grilles. At the top front of the unit is the most important button. The Snooze button. Using the menu system, you can change how long to wait before the alarm goes again. You can set the Chronos to wake you up with a beeping noise, radio or iPod.
The slim-line remote allows you to control playback functionality as well as menu navigation. The controls on the front are arranged in a uniform way, which made it difficult to get used to as you would always have to read the labels before pushing in case you hit the wrong one.
An ambient light sensor built in to the front of the unit automatically dims the display so that you don’t have to mess with the settings each time you go to bed. There’s nothing more annoying than having a bright light in your line of sight when you’re in bed.
The two speaker system provides plenty of volume and certainly enough to give you the wake up call you need in the mornings. Don’t expect to be able to have a party with the Chronos, it wasn’t designed for that after all, but do expect a nice crisp clear sound with a tiny amount of bass.
The Chronos won’t upset any of its larger competitors from the likes of JBL, but then again, there’s not many of the higher end manufacturers that include a DAB radio. At £80, you get a decent speaker set for casual listening which will offer you full iPod playback as well as a digital radio tuner from a manufacturer well established in DAB industry.
